ESS: Placement on left-right scale.

In European Social Survey, the following question is asked:

In politics people sometimes talk of “left” and “right”. Using this card, where would you place yourself on this scale, where 0 means the left and 10 means the right?

Mean score value was calculated from the answers and tabulated according to gender and marital status, as seen below, with the comparison of year 2002, 2004 and 2006:

MeThink: on average…
– men placed themselves more right-leaning as compared to women.
– among men, the marital status group which is most left is separated while the married group belong to most right scale.
– OTOH, for women, the most left-leaning marital status group is divorced/never married while most right-leaning marital status group is widowed.
