US has the highest sugar/sweetener consumption among the selected countries, as high as 68.9 kg/person in a year. This is followed by Switzerland 58.5 kg/person, perhaps due to the fact of they own the famous Switzerland chocolates!
Japan and Italy consumed about 30 kg of sugar/sweeteners per person per year. However, it is quite surprise to note that the diabetes prevalence among Japanese (6.9%) and Italians (6.6%) are not far off better than Americans (8.0%) .
Malaysians take in 37.3 kg of sugar/sweeteners per year. Diabetes prevalence: 9.4% high.

From the above chart, we can see that there is no direct correlation between high sugar consumption and prevalence of DM. Is this true reflection of this relationship or it because the consumption of sugar doesn’t take into account the hidden sugar such as sugar present in processed food or soft drink
